How to Find Answers Quickly in Open Book Exam | CA Final RM (Elective Subject)
The most important thing to do in the open book exam is to find the answer quickly. And for that, you need an index – an alphabetical index to search any keyword quickly. It was first created by Kushal Lodha and it is amazing. This is how it works:
Key Takeaways
- Use the index to locate the answer quickly
- Practice looking up answers
- Give open book exam its due respect
How it works
You have an index which alphabetically lists all the keywords in SM with their page number.
When you read a question, you look for the keywords in the question in your Index and get the page number of the SM. Then you jump to that page where you would’ve already highlighted the keywords and voila, you found the answer.
Importance of Index
Why is this index so important? Because similar stuff is written throughout your book. If the question asks for Cyber Risk, this is mentioned in 10-15 different places and time flies by when you’re searching your book for the answer but can’t find it easily.
Important Points for RM
There are a few important points you should keep in mind for RM:
- Tuitions:
I don’t think you need it. I took Sanjay Saraf Sir’s classes but I did not even refer to my tuition material while revising. Plus, CA Shivam Palan has uploaded free videos on YouTube in case you need any help.
I took classes because I wanted to give this subject its due respect. Concept clarity is going to be very important even in this subject, especially if you get an extremely tough paper like the one in Nov’2020.
- Highlight Keywords in SM:
If you don’t have them highlighted in SM then finding them quickly during the exam would feel like solving a puzzle.
- Update the index for new keywords:
The one given on the internet might be old or might’ve missed something.
- Add Past Year Qs & MTP Qs in the index:
Questions can be repeated as it is. Mark the questions and the paper in which it was asked in your index against appropriate keywords. If there are any new keywords in a question then add them to the index.
- Practice:
You don’t want a shock during your exam. So just practice looking up the answers in all the past papers and MTPs.
- Give a mock test:
Yes, even for the elective subject. You’ll thank me later.
- Be thorough with the material you use
This is an extension of points 1 and 5. It won’t be possible to jump through the material, SM, index, etc. if you haven’t gone through the material multiple times.
- Research the material to be taken
In my attempt, in addition to RM SM, I took SFM SM and printouts of a few chapters from CA Intermediate FM SM. Watch multiple videos to make sure you take everything you’ll need with you.
- Do all the material given by ICAI:
Don’t leave anything to chance.
